FAQs

Dr Kavita Poply is a Consultant in Pain Management and Neuromodulation at Barts Health NHS Trust and a Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary University of London. She holds MBBS, FRCA, FFPMRCA, and PhD qualifications and has been involved in groundbreaking research on spinal cord stimulation and dynamic brain imaging.

Dr Poply’s practice encompasses a wide range of chronic and neuropathic pain conditions, including:

  • Back pain, sciatica, neck pain and brachialgia

  • Headaches, migraines, cluster headaches, trigeminal neuralgia

  • Fibromyalgia, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)

  • Osteoarthritis, joint pains (shoulder, knee, hip, ankle)

  • Chronic abdominal, pelvic, groin, anal, and vulvodynia pains

  • Cancer pain, shingles/pleuritic pain, bruxism and more

Neuromodulation refers to minimally invasive therapies that use electrical stimulation or infusions to modify nerve activity. Dr Poply offers spinal cord stimulation (SCS), multifidus and peripheral nerve stimulators, occipital nerve stimulation, as well as advanced pharmacologic infusions (e.g., intravenous lignocaine).

  • Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS): For back pain, sciatica, diabetic neuropathy, CRPS, osteoarthritic pains.

  • Peripheral Nerve Stimulation: Targeted for shoulder, hip, ankle pains.

  • Occipital Nerve Stimulation: For chronic migraine and cluster headaches.

  • Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA): For facet joint pain, knee and intercostal nerve-related pains.

  • Anti-CGRP Therapies: For refractory headaches and migraines.

Assessment: Detailed history and examination to confirm diagnosis.

Diagnostic Blocks: Medial branch, dorsal root, stellate ganglion, or peripheral nerve blocks to predict response.

Trial Stimulation: Temporary lead placement to assess symptom relief.

Permanent Implantation (if successful trial): Full device implantation under imaging guidance.

Follow-up & Programming: Individualized stimulator programming for optimal pain control.

Ideal candidates are adults with chronic, refractory pain that has not responded adequately to conventional medical or surgical treatments. A multidisciplinary evaluation ensures suitability and maximizes positive outcomes.

malfunction, and transient changes in stimulation. Comprehensive counselling on benefits versus risks is provided prior to any procedure.
